In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, residents in the affected area found themselves waiting for hours in line for gas, sometimes only to learn that they were out. In response to this problem, VERTICES President Dr. Wansoo Im and high school students from the community mapping group IMSOCIO worked together to create a community participatory map, where anyone could report on the availability of gas at stations they were visiting.

The data gathered was used by FEMA, The US. Dept. of Energy and Google Crises Map in their emergency response measures. The project earned praise from US Sect. of Energy, Steven Chu: “Your innovative use of social media and mapping technology to make live fuel supply data streams available filled a significant community information gap.”
