Historic Buildings, Homes, Clubs and Meeting Houses

Home of William Trent

Throughout the city of Trenton many buildings were used as meeting houses, clubs, or community spaces for African American members of the city to congregate. As well, many important individuals’ homes became places for  meetings. However, some sites have a more melancholic association to the Black community. William Trent, a White Scottish immigrant, was the founder of “Trent Town” (later changed to Trenton) and owner of the large estate pictured above located within Trent Town. His home is important to the Black community because Trent was an owner of slaves when he lived there, showing that Trenton is also marred by the dark mark of slavery.
